A MOST UNUSUAL COMBINED VOLUME - NOT IN FREEMAN

Darwin, Charles. JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE NATURAL HISTORY AND GEOLOGY of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N. By Charles Darwin, M.A., F.R.S. 8vo; pp. [ii](adv.), [ii](title-page, verso imprint: Printed by T. and A. Constable, Printers to Her Majesty, at the Edinburgh University Press), viii, 188, [2](section title to index, verso blank), [189]-194(index), [2](adv.); [ii](title-page to The Scarlet Letter, verso Contents), 76 + 4 full-page illustrations on 4 leaves, [2](adv.); [iv](title-page, verso dedication & Contents to Adventures), 54 + 6 full-page listed illustrations on 6 leaves; printed throughout in double-column; original brown publisher's cloth, printed in darker brown; a very good copy. London [and] Manchester; W. H. White & Co.; 1892.
***In addition to the full-page illustrations mentioned in the collation above, there are 11 text illustrations to Darwin's Journal and there is an illustration on each of the three title-pages (these are all dated 1892). A most unusual publisher's issue in one volume of three quite unrelated works, the second being Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter and the third being Sir John Kincaid's (factual) Adventures in the Rifle Brigade in the Peninsula, France, and the Netherlands. Darwin's Journal is Freeman 73 but he does not record this combined issue. #67538
