Cr. 8vo; pp. 492, (adv.); 16 plates, over 30 text illustrations (including maps), index; original blue cloth, decorated in gilt and blind; a nice copy; scarce. London; Ward, Lock & Co., Limited; N.D. ***Freeman 111 (?), a volume in the Minerva Library, New Series, but not explicitly identified as such. The first leaf of the advertisements describes "The Minerva Library (New Series.) Large Crown 8vo, art linen, extra gilt, fully illustrated, 2s." and Volume II in the series is this work. This volume however has a variant binding, and the three-quarter portrait of Darwin in the regular series has been replaced by a portrait of Darwin standing from the painting by Sir J. Collier in the National Portrait Gallery. We hazard a guess that this is a somewhat later publication (concurring with Freeman). The biographical introduction is by G. T. Bettany. #66390
