***Ferguson 8958b; Freeman 59 (variant coloured cloth), this being one of the copies including the unlisted Plan of the 'Beagle' not present in all copies. This plan was drawn by Philip Gidley King, a midshipman on the 'Beagle' under Fitz Roy, and the son of Philip Parker King, commander of the 'Adventure' which accompanied the 'Beagle' on her first surveying expedition (1826-30), and earlier (1818-22) surveyed the western coast of Australia. Philip Gidley King, grandson of his namesake, Captain King, Governor of New South Wales 1800-1806, became a prominent citizen in his own right, as a Member of the Legislative Council of his native New South Wales. This illustrated edition was no doubt issued in response to Nelson's edition first published in 1888, the first substantially illustrated edition. #66379
