Davis, John King. WITH THE "AURORA" IN THE ANTARCTIC 1911-1914. Roy. 8vo, Proof Copy, preceding First Edition; pp. xvi(bound in different order), 178(see remarks below), [2](blank); several maps, plans & illustrations in text, full-page plan of "Aurora", 4 appendices, index; half calf; in very good condition. London; Andrew Melrose, Ltd.; [1919].
***Inscribed on title-page to J. M. Bechervaise and signed by John K. Davis, 5 / Nov. 1958 "Sorry the book itself is out of print." This copy, evidently made up by the Author for presentation to John Bechervaise, consists of the sheets (page proofs) of the "Rough Proof Only" dated "5/1/17" (? 19) and "Revise 8 Aug 1919" (with various intermediate proof reader's approval dates), with numerous corrections by the Author and by proof reader(s), especially to the preliminaries. None of the plates nor the folding map are present. Pp. 19-22 and 177-178 are supplied (bound in) in later photocopy. Pp. 51-56, together with the index (pp. 179-183) are lacking, the index doubtless not yet having been produced at that time. We have supplied (loose) copies of these missing pages for the sake of completeness. A remarkable and interesting survival from the publishing history of a rare book. #57915
