[Dana, Richard Henry; Jr.]. TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST. A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea. New-York: Harper & Brothers - 82 Cliff-Street. 1847. Cr. 12mo, First Edition, later printing; pp. 484(last blank), 20(adv.); original dark brown cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; (extremities lightly worn; some very minor foxing & soiling); a very good copy; very scarce. New York; Harper & Brothers; 1847.
***Harpers' "The Family Library, No. 106. Life Before the Mast" - gilt spine title. A scarce straight reprint of the first edition of which there were a number up to as late as 1854 (we have noted others dated 1841 and 1844); see Hill, page 392-3 (very little detail given), or 492 (Hill, 2nd Edition); see also Renard 398 (this copy, but erroneously described). See Blanck 4434 for the first edition of 1840 which was issued in two bindings (no priority established) one similar to this copy. This issue is essentially a straight reprint of the first edition in Blanck's 'A' binding, only the date on title-page being amended, and with the addition of advertisements at the end. Blanck notes a true second edition of 1869 (Blanck 4471). This classic work of seafaring life has been reprinted in many forms and many languages over the ensuing period. #44415
