***This book was commenced by the Findens and first published in 1838 with a much smaller complement of plates. It is consequently usually known as Finden's Ports and Harbours: the title given on the additional engraved title-pages is "Finden's Views of the Ports, Harbours & Watering Places of Great Britain, Continued by W. H. Bartlett." The plates conform exactly to the lists given in the front of each volume, although a few plates are misplaced and all are delicately and beautifully hand-coloured. The book has been expertly oversewn and neatly recased in its original contemporary binding (which would probably have employed a gutta percha "perfect" binding - notorious for perishing), but there is no sign of any cleaning or washing. We can find no historical record of coloured copies, so this set has since been coloured, presumably at the time of sewing some time in the twentieth century. The colouring is carefully and beautifully executed to a high standard and makes for a most attractive book. #15960
