***William Beckford (1760-1844) recorded this idealised account of his travels in Portugal in his journal of 1794, but they are here published for the first time. Batalha, which he visited several times (but ironically not in 1794) intrigued Beckford and is thought to have had an important impact on various aspects of the design of Fonthill Abbey. #12594
