Darell, William. THE HISTORY OF DOVER CASTLE. By the Revd. Wm. Darell Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth. Illustrated with 10 Views and a Plan of the Castle. London. Printed for Hooper & Wigstead, No. 212, High Holborn, opposite Southampton Street, Bloomsbury Square. 1797. 4to, Second Edition(?); pp. [ii](engraved title-page, with vignette of the castle), viii, 72(last adv.); folding plan as frontispiece, 8 plates, 1 illust. at head of Page 1; nineteenth-century half roan (a little rubbed), with cloth sides by R. Hyne, Bookbinder, 7, Townall St. Dover (with ticket), and with original title-label from front board preserved on a preliminary binder's blank; some slight marginal foxing of plates, but a fine, clean copy; scarce. London; Hooper & Wigstead; 1797 [but c. 1810].
***First published in 1786 by S. Hooper and reissued as here in 1797, this must be a later issue by E. Jeffrey [or Jeffery] as the folding plan bears the imprint: 'Published by E. Jeffrey, Pall Mall, 1810' and the final page (verso of Page 71) carries a full-page advertisement for Edward Jeffery's re-issue of Grose and Astle's 'Antiquarian Repertory' - 'This Day was published ....' That work was published with the date 1809. All issues subsequent to 1786 appear to be very scarce. #12589
