Law [etc.]; 1797.
***General Dumouriez, then a captain of infantry, made a tour of Spain and Portugal in the years 1765 and 1766 by order of the Duke de Choiseul. His report, which displeased both Portuguese and the Spanish on account of its accuracy and bluntness, was published at Lausanne under the title "L'Etat present du royaume de Portugal en 1766", and is here published in English translation for the first time. A quarto edition was published at Hambourg, also in 1797. All editions are rare. The work is divided into four books: Book I, Geographical Description of Portugal; Book II, The Portuguese Colonies (including a substantial account of Brazil, although it seems to have escaped Borba de Moraes); Book III, The Army; Book IV, National Character and Government (including customs, architecture, summary history, the Lisbon earthquake, etc.). #12291
