***This copy which passed through our hands many years ago, contains on the endpaper a pencilled note, ascribed [by ink annotation] to Whitcombe & Tombs, that "only 12 copies of this edition [sic] sold A.W.G. [?]." A further note in the same hand as that which ascribed the foregoing to Whitcombe & Tombs reads - "This is one of the 12 copies sold of the first edition, then Mr. Cowan objecting to the footnote on p. 43 the author had that page [leaf] in the remaining copies cut out. A new page [leaf] was printed and pasted in, the author's remarks being deleted." Bagnall (B1) states that after Cowan's protest, "as many copies as possible were withdrawn and the work reissued with a new page [leaf] mounted in." [Bagnall B1]. #2079
